1 INTRODUCTION The earliest reports of rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation in Zambia date back to 1950s (http://dspace.unza.zm/handle/123456789/5719) following its introduction to Western province. Over a decade (1967–1980) of intensified rice research resulted in the release of many rice varieties that are mainly suitable for lowland hydrological conditions (Mutale et al., 2010).
