1 Background The association between anaemia during pregnancy and adverse perinatal outcomes remains inconclusive [1, 2]. Maternal anaemia affects 36.5% of pregnant women worldwide, with prevalence ranging from 18.9% in the Americas to 47.8% in Southeast Asia [3]. In China, 18.5% of pregnant women were reported to be anaemic in 2019, a similar figure to that in high-resource countries [3].
