Introduction – an overview of Network Segmentation Network segments are now a part of any organization or business’s infrastructure. Network segmentation is the splitting of a computer network within the infrastructure according to business requirements. Segmentation of a network serves many purposes. It helps in avoiding congestion in the overall network and isolates crucial segments (those that have critical data) from other segments.

Endpoint Detection and Response products were introduced to the market in the early 2010’s and have focused on detecting signs of a compromised system by recording behaviors and then alerting humans. Unfortunately, the scale and pace of attacks often overwhelm even the best security analysts and teams. As technology improves, new approaches to performing endpoint detection and response emerge.

Static application security testing (SAST) is the process of examining source code for security defects. SAST is one of many checks in an application security assurance program designed to find and fix security vulnerabilities early in the DevOps process. Integrating SAST into DevOps is critical to building a sustainable program. And automating your SAST tools is an important part of adoption, as it drives efficiency, consistency, and early detection.

If you are thinking of reshaping your business into an MSP (managed service provider) that offers managed security services to SMB clients, your timing could not be better. Small to medium-sized businesses are in dire need of cybersecurity, and they are looking for MSPs that understand their unique needs and can offer the protection they require. In our first post on building managed security services, we discussed the proper defining and bundling of typical MSP-offered services.

Cloud security is not as simple as it may seem. Businesses have a shared security responsibility with cloud service providers, but some lack the knowledge to keep up their share of the bargain. Poor configuration and data leaks are common problems that many businesses encounter in the cloud. These issues can lead to malware infecting your cloud computing environment. Here are a few of the different types of malware that can disrupt your cloud services.

There’s a well-known theory that cockroaches can survive basically anything – even a nuclear explosion. While that theory only rings true to a point, their simple body composition makes them extremely hardy for their size, and difficult to eradicate under most conditions. I’ve been thinking… if cockroaches had an equivalent in the digital world, it would have to be SQL injection (SQLi) vulnerabilities in code.

In the grand scheme of all things security, app permissions are generally treated as the least important. After all, who hasn’t felt that pang of impatience when shown one yes-or-no option after another, when all we want is to start using that cool new app? Indeed, many of us skip right over reading the permissions page when installing an app, but doing so, as we shall see, can be a (very) costly mistake.

The HIPAA Security Rule was established to protect any individual’s electronic personal health information created, received, used, or maintained by a covered entity. One of the signature features of Apple’s macOS Mojave is user safety. As we noted here, 10.14 ushers in a raft of new security-related features that will change the way many people interact with the Mac operating system. Many of these features are designed to stop Apple Events – the technology that underlies AppleScript, osascript, JXA (JavaScript for Automation), Automator, and a great deal of other interapplication communication – from accessing user data without explicit authorisation.
