1 Introduction As Earth's ecosystems face unprecedented and often human-induced changes, predicting how ecological communities will respond to changing environmental conditions has become a major scientific challenge. Ecological stability captures the ability of an ecosystem to withstand and recover from disturbances (Pimm 1984) and is a multidimensional concept.

Aim Global change can impact the stability of biological communities by affecting species richness and synchrony. While most studies focus on terrestrial ecosystems, our research includes both terrestrial and aquatic realms. Previous works measure overall community synchrony as co-variation among co-occurring species, ignoring the tail dependence—when species fluctuate together at extreme abundance levels.

Abstract Determining the factors that affect community stability is crucial to understanding the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in the face of global warming. We investigated how four temperature components (that is, median, variability, trend and extremes) affected diversity–synchrony–stability relationships for 1,246 bird and 580 fish communities from temperate regions.
