Have you ever used a typewriter?
I actually have one that I picked up at an auction for $4, but I don't have ribbon for it. Every so often I type on it as a mental exercise.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It's telling the stories that no one else is telling, and informing people about what's happening in their neighborhood.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
We just got access to Parsely to track views on our stories, which is nice. But I use Facebook constantly to mine for story ideas.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
My high school did not have a newspaper, but my university did. I was a news editor for three semesters and editor-in-chief for another year.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Take a wide variety of courses in school, and after school, find ways to keep learning. Having a versatile skill set will take you far.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I actually listen to news more often than I read it, mostly for the convenience. I enjoy NPR, The Daily (NYT), RadioLab, and Embedded.
