1 Introduction Oral health research has been shaped by diverse theoretical frameworks, from behavioral theories and biopsychosocial models to socioecological and life course perspectives. Increasingly these frameworks recognize that oral health is not solely a clinical concern but is embedded in complex social, cultural, and systemic contexts.

1 Introduction Oral health is an integral component of overall health, well-being and quality of life [1]. Pregnant women are at increased risk of developing oral diseases such as dental caries, periodontal disease and pregnancy granulomas due to physiological, social and behavioural changes [2]. Periodontal disease has also been linked with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preeclampsia and low birth-weight deliveries, although the mechanisms are debated [3].
