Speculation about Canada’s lack of speculative fiction can be put to rest. Together, these works showcase how richly the genre thrives across the landscape of Canadian literature by blending horror, fantasy, gothic, and slipstream with urgent social themes. Many of these titles centre marginalized voices, using the speculative to explore identity, history, and resistance in ways realism alone isn’t able to reach. What unites this selection of titles is how the “unreal” is not escapist.
