A Good and Faithful Servant: Saint Andrew, North Burlingham, Norfolk
East Anglia was a very prosperous part of England in the later Middle Ages. The inhabitants of even the humblest villages took pride in their parish churches and strove to extend and beautify them. North Burlingham is, even today, a small village about 10 miles east of Norwich. They had a stone church by the 12th century, and extended the building in the 14th century, but during the 15th century they improved it again.
Simon Cotton, Author at The Living Church
It must have been hard not to believe the Catholic and apostolic faith with these vivid depictions of the apostles staring at you squarely as you attended Mass. Saulieu is a small town around 45 miles west of Dijon. Its church of Saint Andoche is believed to trace its foundation to the early years of the fourth century. The rebuilding campaign of St. Peter and St. Paul Church was led not by a vicar or a knight but by a remarkable lady, Anne Herling Chamberlain Wingfield.
Cawston and Its Apostles
Cawston is a village in Norfolk, and it is graced with a large and splendid late-medieval church. Its most prominent feature is the tower—nearly 120 feet tall, and with a very stark appearance due to the absence of parapet, battlements, or pinnacles. Its predecessor was blown down in a storm in 1412; the replacement appears to have been under way by 1421. The church attached to it is mainly 15th century, apart from the chancel of c. 1300 and slightly later transepts.
How to make the perfect pancake (according to science)
Analysis: move over Neven Maguire and Nigel Slater, here's what some scientists have to say about the perfect pancake Everyone loves pancakes and wants to know the secret of cooking them. That partly depends on whether you're after the thin, crêpe-like European style or the thicker ones more popular in North America, as each requires a different approach. When you make pancake batter, you are mixing a whole range of different chemicals (so all sorts of reactions take place in the cooking).
The Martyred Church: St. Andoche, Saulieu, France - The Living Church
Situated in a most pleasant region of France, Saulieu is a small town around 45 miles west of Dijon. Its church of Saint Andoche is believed to trace its foundation to the early years of the fourth century A.D., when the original building on the site was built to contain the relics of Sts. Andoche, Thyrse, and Felix. The priest Andoche and his deacon, Thyrse, were sent by St. Polycarp of Smyrna (who had known the Apostle John) to Gaul.
‘While Ludlow Tower Shall Stand’: St. Laurence, Ludlow, Shropshire
By Simon Cotton It’s the tower that does it. Your first sight of Ludlow from afar is drawn to the great middle 15th-century central tower of the church. The gateway to the Western Marches, Ludlow was an important frontier town, whose castle was built around the end of the 11th century to ensure the security of the area by the Lacys, the Marcher Lords mandated by William the Conqueror to secure the border against the unconquered Welsh.
A Masterly Survey of Cathedral Histories
The History of England’s Cathedrals By Nicholas Orme Yale, 320 pages, $30 Readers of Professor Orme’s earlier books, such as Going to Church in Medieval England, will have a good idea of the level of scholarship to expect in this book; they will not be disappointed. This is a fine account of the history of cathedrals, from the mists of Roman Britain to today.

Hati-hati!
Mauriac: The Brave Little Nun’s Basilica
By Simon Cotton The Cantal is one of the emptiest parts of France. When you hear what sounds like cow bells, it is not ringing in your ears or even a Mahler symphony; it most probably is the bells of the Cantal cows. One of the few towns in this rural idyll, Mauriac stands on the zero meridian. The church of Notre Dame des Miracles is a largely Romanesque building, made into a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XV in 1921, the largest and finest church in the region.

The Apostles’ Creed, the Decalogue, and the Lord’s Prayer in Welsh. | Simon Cotton photos Cornerstones By Simon Cotton Getting to Pennant Melangell in Wales is a memorable journey in itself. How China views “strategic competition” with the United States
While “strategic competition” between China and the United States is now regularly as a given, what is missing from much of this discussion is a focus on Chinese attitudes – both official and unofficial. In both Washington and Canberra the prevailing view is that tension with the United States is a consequence of both China’s growing material power and its authoritarianism.
Paul Keating may be the “Grand Appeaser”, but is he wrong?
Former prime minister Paul Keating’s characteristically frank comments on Australia’s Taiwan policy have attracted many criticisms. One of the most predictable is that he is advocating what is generally thought the epitome of bad strategy: appeasement. To be fair to Keating, he was primarily concerned with what Australia should do in the event of a conflict between Taiwan and China, whereas appeasement is a policy you adopt ahead of time in an attempt to avoid conflict.
U.S. Strategic Clarity on Taiwan Wouldn’t Unleash a Spiral of Escalation
As tensions across the Taiwan Strait rise, pressure is growing on the U.S. administration to deter China more effectively by giving up on strategic ambiguity and moving towards a policy of strategic clarity. Indeed, last month we may have had an indication that this is already occurring.
Strategic Clarity on Taiwan Wouldn't Trigger Escalation
As tensions across the Taiwan Strait rise, pressure is growing on the US administration to deter China more effectively by giving up on strategic ambiguity and moving towards a policy of strategic clarity. Indeed, last month we may have had an indication that this is already occurring. When asked at a CNN townhall whether the US would come to Taiwan’s defence if China attacked, President Joe Biden didn’t equivocate: ‘Yes,’ he said, ‘we have a commitment to do that.’ Read Full Article »
Who Should Combat Climate Change in the Fashion Industry?
Written by Simon Cotton in Business on the 19th October 2021 / Who Should Combat Climate Change in the Fashion Industry? I’ve got some concerns about the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26). I’m not upset about the irony of thousands of people flying from all over the world to Glasgow to be part of a sustainability conference, as I can see that we need to bring people together to discuss these massive issues.
What will electric vehicle batteries look like in the future
Credit: Vlad Tchompalov/Unsplash. “Gigafactories” could one day be churning out millions of electric vehicle batteries in the UK. The government has already committed the country to a ban on selling new petrol- and diesel-engined cars by 2030, so it seems that electric vehicles (or EVs, as they’re often abbreviated) are likely to replace much of today’s fleet.

The Changing World Of Perfume: Why Some Chemicals Are Being Removed
Making scents of it. MIAD Communication Design, CC BY-NC-SA By Simon Cotton, University of Birmingham There are two types of perfume in the world: the fast turnover celebrity perfumes, designed to hit the market and make profits before a star’s capital wanes; and the timeless classics, with their expensive ingredients and loyal followings. While the names endure, many of the ingredients and quantities have changed over time.
What is Methamphetamine or ‘Crystal Meth’?
Ever been in love? You’ll know the rush. That’s chemistry at work. Our brain produces molecules such as 2-phenylethylamine, the mood enhancer also found in chocolate. But eating chocolate won’t make you fall in love – enzymes in your liver break it down before it gets to the brain. Chemistry does explain why certain drugs produce similar mood-enhancing effects and also why they can become a problem.

Here Are the 5 Most Deadliest Poisons on Earth
When asked to name a poison, people may well think of cyanide, arsenic, or strychnine. But these are not the most toxic substances known. More poisonous than these, but still not near the top of the tree, is tetrodotoxin, the pufferfish toxin that poisons around 50 Japanese people every year. The fish is a delicacy in Japan, but can be lethal if prepared incorrectly. Incidentally, this was the poison favored by evil assassin Rosa Klebb in James Bond film From Russia With Love.

Krokodil: how 'flesh-eating zombie drug' is causing a global crisis
Desomorphine has been in the news lately. Never heard of it? That’s quite possible. But you may well have heard its street name: “Krokodil.” However you know it, it’s a cheap substitute for heroin that has been widely branded a “flesh-eating zombie drug” – and it’s bad news. There are two reasons for its horrific reputation, one related to desomorphine itself, and the second to the way the street drug is produced. Desomorphine was actually first synthesised in 1932.
Krokodil: how 'flesh-eating zombie drug' is causing a global crisis
There are two reasons for its horrific reputation, one related to desomorphine itself, and the second to the way the street drug is produced. Desomorphine was actually first synthesised in 1932. As you would guess from its name, it is a "semi-synthetic" relative of morphine, the natural painkiller derived from opium poppies. Compared with morphine, it has one less double bond and one fewer –OH group (morphine has two, desomorphine has one).
