Dynamic breathing behaviour of the titanium-based metal-organic framework NTU-9 upon adsorption of water and organic solvents
Dynamic breathing behaviour of the titanium-based metal-organic framework NTU-9 upon adsorption of water and organic solvents Understanding the structural response of framework materials to external stimuli has been of great interest. However, little is known about the stimuli responsiveness of titanium-based metal-organic frameworks.
Synthesis of micrometre-thick oriented 2D covalent organic framework films by a kinetic polymerization pathway - Nature Synthesis
Abstract Despite advances in the field of 2D polymerization, the synthesis of high-quality, micrometre-thick films of oriented 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) remains challenging. Conventional approaches focusing on thermodynamic control of the polymerization pathway face a detrimental trade-off between orientation and thickness.
Negative gas adsorption transitions and pressure amplification phenomena in porous frameworks
Nanoporous solids offer a wide range of functionalities for industrial, environmental, and energy applications. However, only a limited number of porous materials are responsive, i.e. the nanopore dynamically alters its size and shape in response to external stimuli such as temperature, pressure, light or the presence of specific molecular stimuli adsorbed inside the voids deforming the framework.
Strategies to achieve reproducible synthesis of phase-pure Zr-porphyrin metal-organic frameworks - Communications Materials
Abstract Porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are gaining traction for various applications due to their sorption, optoelectronic and catalytic properties. MOFs with Zr-based nodes constitute a particularly robust and versatile class of MOFs in which incorporation of metals into the porphyrin core allows further tuning of their physico-chemical properties. However, significant challenges regarding the phase-pure synthesis of Zr-porphyrin MOFs have slowed down progress in the field.

Dynamic two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks - Nature Chemistry
Abstract Porous covalent organic frameworks (COFs) enable the realization of functional materials with molecular precision. Past research has typically focused on generating rigid frameworks where structural and optoelectronic properties are static. Here we report dynamic two-dimensional (2D) COFs that can open and close their pores upon uptake or removal of guests while retaining their crystalline long-range order.
Active Site Engineering in Reticular Covalent Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction
1 Introduction With ever increasing industrial development, our heavy reliance on fossil fuels for energy production has led to an explosive surge in CO2 emission causing serious global warming and environmental issues.[1-3] The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report has highlighted the severity of such problems pertaining to global health and called for immediate action for the mitigation of climate change.
Functional dynamics in framework materials - Communications Chemistry
Abstract Dynamic crystalline materials have emerged as a unique category of condensed phase matter that combines crystalline lattice with components that display dynamic behavior in the solid state. This has involved a range of materials incorporating dynamic functional units in the form of stimuli-responsive molecular switches and machines, among others.
On the role of history-dependent adsorbate distribution and metastable states in switchable mesoporous metal-organic frameworks - Nature Communications
Abstract A unique feature of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in contrast to rigid nanoporous materials is their structural switchabilty offering a wide range of functionality for sustainable energy storage, separation and sensing applications. This has initiated a series of experimental and theoretical studies predominantly aiming at understanding the thermodynamic conditions to transform and release gas, but the nature of sorption-induced switching transitions remains poorly understood.
Active Separation of Water Isotopologues by Local Molecular Motion in Microporous Framework Materials
Graphical Abstract Highlight of a recent work from Su et al. on the separation of water isotopologues. Dynamic pore windows are created in a porous coordination polymer based on ligand flipping. Adsorption experiments show that the dynamic pore windows favor kinetic adsorption of H2O over D2O for unprecedented water isotopologue separation selectivity. Abstract Around 10–15 % of the world's energy consumption is accounted for by the separation and purification of chemicals.
Cooperative light-induced breathing of soft porous crystals via azobenzene buckling - Nature Communications
Abstract Although light is a prominent stimulus for smart materials, the application of photoswitches as light-responsive triggers for phase transitions of porous materials remains poorly explored. Here we incorporate an azobenzene photoswitch in the backbone of a metal-organic framework producing light-induced structural contraction of the porous network in parallel to gas adsorption.

Massive Pressure Amplification by Stimulated Contraction of Mesoporous Frameworks**
Abstract Herein we demonstrate mesoporous frameworks interacting with carbon dioxide leading to stimulated structural contractions and massive out‐of‐equilibrium pressure amplification well beyond ambient pressure. Carbon dioxide, a non‐toxic and non‐flammable working medium, is promising for the development of pressure‐amplifying frameworks for pneumatic technologies and safety systems.

Towards general network architecture design criteria for negative gas adsorption transitions in ultraporous frameworks
Abstract Switchable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been proposed for various energy-related storage and separation applications, but the mechanistic understanding of adsorption-induced switching transitions is still at an early stage. Here we report critical design criteria for negative gas adsorption (NGA), a counterintuitive feature of pressure amplifying materials, hitherto uniquely observed in a highly porous framework compound (DUT-49).

Influence of Precursor Porosity on Sodium and Sulfur Promoted Iron/Carbon Fischer-Tropsch Catalysts derived from Metal-Organic Frameworks
Iron-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with varying porosity are converted by pyrolysis into iron/carbon catalysts with predetermined composition and tailored pore structural features for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of lower C -C olefins. Significantly higher activity arises for catalysts with higher porosity and decreased iron particle size derived from hierarchical MOF xerogel/aerogel precursors as compared to a purely microporous MOF.
Tailoring adsorption induced phase transitions in the pillared-layer type metal-organic framework DUT-8(Ni).
Tailoring the characteristics of gating transitions in the porous network, Ni (2,6-ndc) dabco (ndc = naphthalenedicarboxylate, dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane), also termed DUT-8(Ni) (DUT = Dresden University of Technology), was achieved by systematically adjusting the critical synthesis parameters. The impact of the starting composition and solvent mixtures in the synthesis was found to critically affect the guest-response properties of the obtained materials.
