Interferometric carrier-envelope phase stabilization for ultrashort pulses in the mid-infrared
Abstract We demonstrate an active carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stabilization scheme for optical waveforms generated by difference-frequency mixing of two spectrally detuned and phase-correlated pulses. By performing ellipsometry with spectrally overlapping parts of two co-propagating near-infrared generation pulse trains, we stabilize their relative timing to 18 as. Consequently, we can lock the CEP of the generated mid-infrared (MIR) pulses with a remaining phase jitter below 30 mrad.
A case of co-occuring synesthesia, autism, prodigious talent and strong structural brain connectivity
Abstract Background Synesthesia is a sensory phenomenon where certain domain-specific stimuli trigger additional sensations of e.g. color or texture. The condition occurs in about 4% of the general population, but is overrepresented in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), where it might also be associated with the presence of prodigious talents.
Event Horizon: Do you understand the younger generation?
“A region in spacetime beyond which events cannot affect an outside observer.” Event Horizon is a column by new CN recruit Stuart Wood, taking a look at the events industry from a newcomer’s perspective. In this second instalment, he treads the perilous waters of Instagram, millennials and avocado toast to bring back some tips for the event industry’s older generation.
Why Christmas is the most stressful time of year for event planners
Ho, ho, no? Christmas is often the most stressful time of year for event planners. EEF Venues managing director David Vaughton reminds us to look after our mental health. Around this time every year, a survey emerges, highlighting the most stressful jobs. The annual CareerCast Job Stress report is based on an evaluation of 11 stress factors, including hazards, deadlines, physical demands and life at risk.
The benefits of GDPR | Conference News
Tanya Pinchuk, managing director at ExpoPlatform, outlines some benefits of GDPR to organisers With the enforcement date of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) just around the corner, and social media data use under intense media scrutiny (Facebook/Cambridge Analytica), there has never been a better time to ensure your data affairs are in order. But rather than focus on the negative side of this new regulation, we should be looking at the benefits that it will bring.
Finding the balance
Wellbeing and work-life balance are hot topics for 2018, and the conferencing and business travel industries have their role to play. Increasingly, hotels are responding to this change to create more flexibility with event organisers, by offering advice and suggestions to ensure improved delegate wellbeing – which in turn can positively impact on delegate productivity.
Confessions of an idiot Brexiteer
I voted for Brexit. When I ticked the ‘Leave’ box, I believed my vote would be a warning that Eurocrats’ power had extended too far. They were over-meddling in the business of my sovereign nation. Safe in the knowledge acquired from polls and media that Vote Leave would lose, I believed that a close result would go some way to putting the EU on notice that it needed to shape up.
