What Is an IP Address? An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique identifier for each device on a network, such as the internet. When you connect to the internet, your internet service provider (ISP) assigns you an IP address. The primary purpose of an IP address is to allow web-connected devices to find and communicate with each other.
