Last year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents snatched Mahmoud Khalil from his home in Manhattan and quickly spirited him away to a detention center in Louisiana, hundreds of miles from his then pregnant wife. From the beginning, the Trump administration targeted Mr. Khalil, a lawful permanent resident, for speaking out for Palestinian human rights, and criticizing Israel and U.S. support for Israel.

Mahmoud Khalil is a recent Columbia graduate student and U.S. green card holder who, in his own words, describes himself as a Palestinian political prisoner. The Trump administration snatched him from his home owned by Columbia and now wants to deport him, even though he is a legal permanent resident who is not, and has never been, accused of, charged with, or convicted of any crime.

From its inception, LinkNYC – the public WiFi kiosks that are run by a consortium of companies including Google subsidiary Sidewalk Labs – have always posed a threat to privacy. But after nine years of operation and a recent audit, it’s fair to say LinkNYC represents a barely mitigated privacy disaster. The project puts the personal information of millions of New Yorkers at serious risk and primarily sees the public as walking targets for adverting.
