1 Introduction Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most common cause of peripheral neuropathy (PN), accounting for nearly half of all cases [1]. Further, diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) affects nearly 50% of individuals with DM [2-4]. DPN is the fifth most common cause of neurological disability worldwide [5] and is associated with significant health care costs. The global health expenditure in 2021 due to DPN was $966 billion [6], while annually in the United States, DPN costs $10 billion [7].
