A faction of the National Freedom Party (NFP) led by the party’s National Chairperson Msawenkosi Mkhabela says the KwaZulu-Natal government of provincial unity (GPU) is here to stay, despite the party’s president Ivan Barnes earlier announcing the withdrawal of the party. The disgruntled group within the NFP which supports the government of provincial unity held a media briefing in Durban today and rejected the party leadership’s decision on the matter.

KwaZulu-Natal National Freedom Party Chairperson, Mbali Shinga has been placed on immediate suspension. Shinga’s suspension comes after she openly defied party instructions to support a motion of no-confidence vote against Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli last week. Shinga, who serves as the MEC for social development in the KZN provincial cabinet, is the sole member of the provincial legislature from the NFP.

Mchunu recently caused a stir on social media after his remarks condemning an LGBTIQ+ couple who were seen on social media, dressed in Zulu traditional regalia during their wedding ceremony. Mchunu denounced the couple and demanded that they refrain from wearing Zulu traditional attire. The Human Rights Commission has demanded that Mchunu retract his statement or face litigation.
