1 INTRODUCTION Sirtuins (silent mating-type information regulation 2 homologs; SIRTs), also known as the class III histone deacetylases (HDAC), are nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-dependent enzymes with homology to silent information regulator 2 (Sir2) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
