Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Copy editor for Where Y'at Magazine in New Orleans ... ahh, the memories!
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! The keys are so tactile. I also had an old-school word processor growing up. And does anyone else miss the sound of dot matrix printers?
How is social media changing news?
It's changing the integrity of headlines as misleading clickbait gets even stickier. Responsible editors have never been so important!
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To tell stories. To provoke thought. To change minds.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram, if I must.
Why did you become a journalist?
To give voices to the voiceless, shine a light on those who deserve it, and introduce different points of view to make the world smaller.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
"My Mother, the Sparrow," an homage to my mom, who I often ignore for chef father kept at arm's length, atop a pedestal.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Brush up on your grammar! And learn from your mistakes.
What's your favorite drink?
Thai iced tea with extra ice to dilute the sugar just enough.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Lifting weights, swinging kettlebells, or climbing something or other.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
Cook's Illustrated, Cooking Light, Eating Well
