Aliyah Alpert, from Alpert Home School in Phoenix, tied for ninth in the 96th Scripps National Spelling Bee on Wednesday at the competition in National Harbor, Maryland.

James "Jim" Patrick Weiers, former Republican speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives, died on Friday at age 70. His brother, Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, released a statement on Friday evening. "While Jim's life was more than his service to the state, for those who knew him in this context, I ask that you remember and celebrate Jim's service to our great state, as well as his exemplary leadership as the former speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives," Jerry Weiers said.
