If you are an early riser, you may want to take a look outside towards the southeast to eastern sky Tuesday morning, about a fist-width held at arm’s length above the horizon. Why? Because you may have the chance of witnessing the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket heading up in the sky and possibly creating a visual spectacle after its scheduled 6:33 a.m. launch for the Dragon’s 35th Commercial Resupply Services (CRS-35) mission to the International Space Station.

Got binoculars? A telescope? If you do, haul them out early Tuesday morning to observe the waning crescent moon occult — block our view — of Jupiter during pre-dawn hours. Viewing the event with no optical aid, smartphone or camera is also possible as the celestial pair will be bright and easy to spot in the East. And hallelujah, the weather looks good.

“Eyes to the Skies” is a recurring feature and publishes on the first of every month. You can find it on WTOP’s The Space Place. Email Greg your space questions and he might answer them in the next edition. Welcome to WTOP’s monthly feature “Eyes to the Skies.” Each month will feature the best the sky has to offer stargazers regarding the moon, planets and stars. Space-related events that might interest you taking place in the D.C. region will be included as well.
