1 Introduction Scientists have warned of the consequences of unsustainable consumption of Earth’s resources since the 1800s [e.g., Arrhenius & Holden, 1897; Fourier, 1837], but with lacking effect. Indeed, the looming catastrophes we are facing today attest to the long-term insufficiency of science communication to bring about the necessary large-scale changes in consumption patterns.
