Bone marrow transplant protects mice from sickle cell-mediated large artery remodeling
Editor’s summary Sickle cell disease (SCD) can be cured by bone marrow transplantation (BMT), but the effects of this therapy on blood vessel pathology are not fully understood. Hatoum et al. used the Townes mouse model of SCD to show that early BMT at 2 months of age was more effective at preventing vessel pathology than later BMT at 4 months of age. Label-free magnetic resonance angiography was used to assess carotid artery luminal area over time in this model.
Single-cell analysis of aplastic anemia reveals a convergence of NK and NK-like CD8+ T cells with a disease-associated TCR signature
Editor’s summary Immune aplastic anemia is an autoimmune disease where the immune system reacts against normal hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs), causing profound and life-threatening bone marrow failure. To better understand the drivers of aplastic anemia, Lundgren and Huuhtanen et al. characterized bone marrow samples isolated from patients with the disease.
A gut Eggerthella lenta-derived metabolite impairs neutrophil function to aggravate bacterial lung infection
Editor’s summary In bronchiectasis, chronic lung infection leads to permanent widening and thickening of the airways. Wang et al. show that gut microbe Eggerthella lenta can contribute to chronic airway infection and its severity. Fecal microbiota transfer from patients with bronchiectasis and direct transfer of the bacterium into mice both exacerbated lung pathology. More specifically, the E.
Reduced cerebellar rhythm by climbing fiber denervation is linked to motor rhythm deficits in mice and ataxia severity in patients
Editor’s summary Cerebellar ataxia is a neurological condition affecting coordination and movement and is without US Food and Drug Administration–approved treatments. Here, Lin and colleagues investigated how disruptions of climbing fiber (CF)–to–Purkinje cell connections affect ataxia symptoms. Histology on postmortem brain tissue from patients showed a loss of CFs in different subtypes of ataxia.
BCKDHA-BCKDHB digenic gene therapy restores metabolic homeostasis in two mouse models and a calf with classic maple syrup urine disease
Editor’s summary The only treatments for maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), which is usually caused by mutations in BCKDHA or BCKDHB, encoding branched-chain α-ketoacid dehydrogenase E1α subunit or E1β subunit, respectively, are a strictly controlled diet or allogeneic liver transplantation.

Tunable ion energy barrier modulation through aliovalent halide doping for reliable and dynamic memristive neuromorphic systems
Abstract Memristive neuromorphic computing has emerged as a promising computing paradigm for the upcoming artificial intelligence era, offering low power consumption and high speed. However, its commercialization remains challenging due to reliability issues from stochastic ion movements. Here, we propose an innovative method to enhance the memristive uniformity and performance through aliovalent halide doping.

Global producer responsibility for plastic pollution
Abstract Brand names can be used to hold plastic companies accountable for their items found polluting the environment. We used data from a 5-year (2018–2022) worldwide (84 countries) program to identify brands found on plastic items in the environment through 1576 audit events. We found that 50% of items were unbranded, calling for mandated producer reporting.

Anti-COX-2 autoantibody is a novel biomarker of immune aplastic anemia - Leukemia
Abstract In immune aplastic anemia (IAA), severe pancytopenia results from the immune-mediated destruction of hematopoietic stem cells. Several autoantibodies have been reported, but no clinically applicable autoantibody tests are available for IAA. We screened autoantibodies using a microarray containing >9000 proteins and validated the findings in a large international cohort of IAA patients (n = 405) and controls (n = 815).
Modern human incursion into Neanderthal territories 54,000 years ago at Mandrin, France
Abstract Determining the extent of overlap between modern humans and other hominins in Eurasia, such as Neanderthals and Denisovans, is fundamental to understanding the nature of their interactions and what led to the disappearance of archaic hominins. Apart from a possible sporadic pulse recorded in Greece during the Middle Pleistocene, the first settlements of modern humans in Europe have been constrained to ~45,000 to 43,000 years ago.
Somatic mutations in lymphocytes in patients with immune-mediated aplastic anemia
Abstract The prevalence and functional impact of somatic mutations in nonleukemic T cells is not well characterized, although clonal T-cell expansions are common. In immune-mediated aplastic anemia (AA), cytotoxic T-cell expansions are shown to participate in disease pathogenesis. We investigated the mutation profiles of T cells in AA by a custom panel of 2533 genes.
