What was your first job as a journalist?

I was a sports stringer, covering preps and small college. I was also a copy clerk, i.e. a go-fer.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

This officially makes me old. Yes, that is how I originally practiced my trade. Thanks Mrs. Horton for trying to teach me this skill.

How is social media changing news?

It puts us in competition with 'citizen journalists.' We must set ourselves apart as being the real professionals.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Billie Newman, reporter played by Linda Kelsey, on Lou Grant.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means having a great responsibility to tell the story of our lives, to chronicle history on the highest and lowest level.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email is probably the best way. I do suggest a follow up phone call to make sure I got the email and, perhaps, to remind me that I received .

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

My Dell laptop, Droid phone with its recorder app and hotspot app, and my 35mm Nikon with 200mm lens. I also have my digital recorder.

What's your favorite social network?

For REAL social interaction, I like Facebook. I promote my work via Twitter and Google+.

Why did you become a journalist?

I couldn't see myself as a teacher -- my mom's vision -- trying to keep the attention of students who generally didn't want to be there.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

What didn't I do? Wrote news, sports, , typed stories of others, sold ads, wrecked my car ...

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

It was Jan. 2000 story about Tony Rasmus, coach of the Phenix City Little League baseball team, and efforts to run him out of town.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be persistent, remembering that the answer is out there, it just may not be where it is most obvious. Also, take time for yourself.
