Michelle Danglade was about 10 seconds into her speech at the College of Staten Island’s commencement Thursday when a handful of shouts rang out from the crowd of graduates and families. “Make it louder!” someone called out from the folding chairs on the lawn. Danglade’s voice instantly grew, her speech uninterrupted. Someone had adjusted the volume on a prerecorded video, which played on two large monitors 30 yards away from the stage as the actual Danglade sat silently.

And the faculty member, Derek R.
