Back in the last century, Stan Mack and I worked together at the Village Voice, where he produced a weekly comic called Stan Mack’s Real Life Funnies. The strips featured an illustrated Mack wandering around New York City, eavesdropping on what people of all sorts were saying, and drawing them and their stories.

Whew… Ok, I feel much better now. Well rested and ready to continue:Feeding a Yen by Calvin Trillin: It’s not that I love all food writers or that I necessarily am enamored by all writing about food. I’ve just noticed these past few years that there are particular characteristics shared by a lot of food writers that attract me to them as writers. They are very knowledgeable but also self-effacing.

Do I love Melissa Broder’s So Sad Today because I wish I had written it, and she’s approximately half my age? She writes about some topics I am familiar with (sick husband, nonmonogamy). She writes about topics I’ve suffered from, but seem to have outgrown (anxiety attacks, depression). She also writes about topics I have no personal knowledge of (eating disorders, drug addiction). Throughout, she made me think about my own life and often prompted me to start writing myself.
