Whimsical and Endearingly Weird: Japanese Dark Cabaret Review

Walking down the stairs to Sean and Dolly’s, I was immediately greeted by the multiple reproductions of Japanese dark cabaret performer Amita Hachidori’s face. Amita, eyes wide and mouth agape, stared from posters, flyers, t-shirts and jackets, dressed in his signature costume – dark eyeshadow, a fishnet body-stocking and a bowler hat. Immediately, I was drawn to the drama of the image, with Amita reminiscent of a character out of a German Expressionist film.

The racial discrimination proceedings against University of Sydney academics Professor John Keane and Dr Nick Riemer received their first interlocutory hearing in the Federal Court of Australia this week. The joint cases are widely viewed as an early test of how hate speech provisions under section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act (RDA) 1975 (Cth) apply to political identity.
