Jean Purdy Jessica Adams Jean Purdy trained as a nurse at Addenbrooke’s Hospital before joining the laboratory of Robert Edwards in the Cambridge Physiology Department as a research assistant in 1968. The lab’s goal was to fertilise a human egg outside of the body – a process now known as in vitro fertilisation (IVF) – with the eventual aim of implanting the embryo into a prospective mother. Although Purdy’s official role was to manage the laboratory, she did far more than administrative work.
