Why this is important: Failures in system security can cause wide-spread blackouts The Australian grid operates within a narrow range of frequency and voltage Disturbances are a normal part of operating a large and complex electricity network Every power system has technical parameters that must be continuously managed to ensure the lights stay on for customers.

For the first time in decades, the biggest draws on the grid are not coming from facilities built near a power station. Data centres' preference to be close to cities and optic fibre will reshape the power system, challenging existing assumptions about grid design, system strength, stability and security. Traditionally, industrial facilities’ load was modest relative to total grid demand.
