If you could offer one piece of advice to folks just discovering and starting their optical careers, what would it be and why? • Be kind to everyone, because it is a small optical world. — • Be curious, and learn all that you can about the industry. Get to know your patients and customers, their families, and their interests. Optical careers are rewarding in more ways than you can imagine. — Deb Jaeger, Eye Center of the Dakotas, Bismarck, ND • Learn everything you can about the whole industry.

If a leader could change only one thing in their team tomorrow to improve performance, what would it be and why? • Have them trust the system by offering the patient everything, not just what they think they need. — • Less staring at their cellphones. — • Better training. Sometimes we get so busy that we train people “on the fly.” We need to be better about ironing out the details of each task. — • Joy.

Do you participate in your local Chamber of Commerce, Rotary or other local community groups? • We work with The Lions Club to give free exams and glasses to children and adults in our community that otherwise wouldn’t get eyecare. — • We are active in our local Chamber, it helps to connect us with other small business, and there are a variety of events each month to network with. — • I do participate and I get so much good coaching information as well as networking.
