Australia is a foreign country. Our best writers know that it does not make for a comfortable home. We have built our nation against silence. An “unhuman” silence, Les Murray called it. “Things are so wordless,” he wrote. True, this land does not lend itself to extravagant words. When we speak too loudly, we make fools of ourselves. The noise that has followed Anzac Day has been as embarrassing as the booing was foolish. Booing a welcome or acknowledgement is oafish. It is also rare.

For several years, I lived next to a family who were the very definition of neighbourliness. We would come home late from work to find meals on our front step. Our doors were open to each other. The father and I shared an interest in football. My wife became an honorary aunty to the children. She shared coffee with the mother and her friends. We swapped gifts on birthdays and holy days. They were a family of religious faith, of decency.

Pete Hegseth increasingly sounds like Vladimir Putin. That association would, no doubt, flatter him. Like Putin, the United States Secretary of War speaks in biblical terms. As with Putin in Ukraine, Hegseth likens his Iran campaign to a holy war. Like Putin, he revels in the language of vengeance and violence. Like Putin, he has the bread of apocalypse in his mouth. Hegseth and Putin inhabit an unhinged morality where so-called international law is mere paper.
