A teenage girl died trying to save her seven-year-old cousin who “got into trouble” as the tide came in on West Mersea beach, according to a family friend. Mishba Uddin said the 15-year-old girl and her mother, who also died, “were not very good swimmers” and were just on a “day out” at the beach. Essex Police said officers were called by the ambulance service at 5.35pm on Wednesday after reports that several people had got into difficulty in the water near Seaview Avenue.

The woman and teenager who died after getting into trouble at Mersea beach, Essex, have been named locally as a mother and daughter from East London. A mother and her teenage daughter died after getting into difficulty in the water off the coast of West Mersea. They have been named as Shally Rahman, 42, and daughter Samiha Rahman, 15. A family member of Shally and Samiha Rahman has confirmed to the BBC that a seven-year-old boy remains in a serious condition in hospital.
