1. Introduction Tryptophan (W) is one of only a handful of amino acids that can undergo proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET). In proteins, W partakes in PCET-mediated pathways that transfer electrons between different redox-active amino acids up to more than 10 Å apart to reach its destination. While electron transfer can be long-range, the coupled protons are transferred over much shorter distances (<1 Å) in each step to either a neighboring amino acid or water.
