Starz Outlander

Writing these reviews is not always easy. I generally have to watch the episode three times, which can sometimes be painful (I’ve reviewed other shows besides Outlander, and believe me, some of them have been WAY more difficult to get through). Frequently, though, my opinion changes as I rewatch – usually for the better. A rewatch often brings out points I missed the first time, since I’m always eager for the story and how it will play out.

I often look for a theme in Outlander episodes. In this one, a theme jumped out at me immediately – sin and redemption. But not in the way you might think of – those redeemed have not sinned, and the sinners are not redeemed. This episode was terrific! Ian’s story was strong and important. Jamie’s journey to complete belief in the necessity of American revolution finally has a resolution.

Last December, I was asked to help out with the Thru the Stones convention in Iowa by leading the on-stage chat with Outlander’s stunt coordinator and horsemaster Dom Preece. He was funny and knowledgeable, happy to dish about actors’ abilities (or not), and we had fun with the audience throughout our hour and a half discussion. Dom has been the show’s stunt coordinator and horsemaster from the beginning.
