See all 12 answers →What was your first job as a journalist?
My first foray into journalism was as a staff writer for Circus Magazine in the mid-90s, a wild and exhilarating introduction to the world of rock and roll. It was a baptism by fire, placing me right in the heart of the creative process. Interviewing bands, witnessing the energy of live shows, and learning the intricate mechanics of how music was made—it was an incredible privilege. That job wasn't just about writing; it was about immersing myself in a vibrant culture and capturing its essence, a thrilling education that shaped my understanding of storytelling.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I remember the first time I really used a typewriter in high school. The solid clack of the keys, the way the carriage returned with a satisfying ding—it was a revelation. But the real magic was seeing my words appear in that crisp, dark type on the page. Suddenly, my thoughts weren't just scribbles in a notebook; they were real, solid, and permanent. It was in that moment, with the ink still slightly wet on the paper, that I understood the power of writing, the ability to transform ideas into something tangible and impactful.
How is social media changing news?
Social media accelerates the news cycle, creating a constant, often unfiltered, stream of information. This speed prioritizes immediacy over verified facts, leading to rapid dissemination of both accurate and misleading content. Consequently, audiences must critically evaluate sources as news breaks, recognizing that initial social media reports may lack the depth and accuracy of traditional, vetted journalism.
