EDINBURGH 2023: Review: WHISKY & WITCHES PRESENTS MYTHICAL BEASTS, The Mother Superior - The Mother Superior Cave
If you have a couple of hours to spare and you want to try smoky, deep, fruity, warming, delicious whiskies, while also listening to folk tales, tasting notes that will blow your mind, and live singing that will haunt your heart and soul - look no further and make sure you get a ticket to Whisky & Witches. Jane and Christine are the genius creators behind this afternoon of delectable pleasure. Jane owns The Mother Superior pub in Leith.
EDINBURGH 2023: Review: SHAKEITUP: THE IMPROVISED SHAKESPEARE SHOW, Gilded Balloon Teviot - Billiard Room
Going in, I wasn't sure what to expect from this show. And as it turns out, neither do the performers. With no script, no plot and no directions, the lovely group from ShakeItUp Theatre create a modern Shakespeare play in front of your very eyes. I recommend getting a hold of their Twitter/X handle before you go in (@ShakeItUpImprov) because they ask you immediately to Tweet lines to them that they can use in the play.
EDINBURGH 2023: Review: A GAY DAD, TheSpace @ Symposium Hall - Annexe
Don't go into A Gay Dad with any expectations. Honestly. Don't. I had the feeling it was a stand-up show about being, well, a gay dad. And it was funny. But it was also a heck of a lot more, in many surprising ways. This is Xander's first ever show. Ever. He's actually a maths teacher, a brother, a father, a son and really into fitness (as displayed by his oiled, muscly torso which is on display). He has wanted to do this for years and finally set himself the challenge. And I'm so pleased he did.
EDINBURGH 2023: Review: ALISON SPITTLE: SOUP, Monkey Barrel Comedy - The Hive (Hive 1)
The observation that stayed with me most during Alison Spittle's hour of Soup-based comedy, was the realisation that "self-care" means having the same mental health problems, it's just that now you have an expensive scented candle and a face mask to go with it. Mental health features a fair bit in this lovely show, a hot topic with a number of comedians these days. And I'm all here for it. Especially Alison's understated, open and refreshing look at her own "Menty B". But this show is about Soup.
EDINBURGH 2023: Review: TONY! [THE TONY BLAIR ROCK OPERA], Pleasance At EICC - Pentland Theatre
My salad days were spent growing up as a teen in the Blair era. My life has been shaped by Cool Britannia, The War on Terror and Sexed-Up Documents. It's in my blood and created the outline of my now fully-formed "Millennial Angst". Therefore, of course I wanted to review a show, examining and laughing at the very first Pop Prime Minister. The man whose speech after the death of Princess Diana changed the way people interacted with politicians for the better.
EDINBURGH 2023: Review: RENT, Paradise In St Augustine's - The Sanctuary
How *do* you measure a year in the life? Anyone who knows anything about RENT knows that's the central question. It's not just any year. It's a year documenting the friendship, the love and the tragedy borne out in a group of people in Manhattan in the early 90s, the AIDS crisis in full bloom. I must confess I hadn't seen RENT before. I know the opera it is based on Puccini's La bohème, so I was excited to see how it would be done. I knew some songs but I hadn't put them in context.
Review: MADELEINE HAMILTON: PIPING HOT, Just The Tonic At The Caves - Just The Wee One
Madeleine Hamilton blows. Her pipes. She blows her pipes and she blows them well. But this is not your average bagpipe show. Through the medium of Scotland's most famous instrument, Hamilton demonstrates with deft and witty imagination that these noise tubes are actually just like men and falling in (and out) of love and lust. The Texan native talks us through the parts of the bagpipes and how she learnt to play them, years ago on a semester abroad at the University Of Edinburgh.

Review: THE BOOK OF MORMON, Edinburgh Playhouse
It might be impossible not to have heard about the musical, The Book of Mormon. Unless you've been locked away from the world for the last couple of years. Oh well, pandemic aside, this show needs almost no introduction. For those of you who would like one, let me tell you about The Book of Mormon, currently on tour in Edinburgh. First off, this isn't a show for someone who has a problem with swearing or is easily offended.
Review: QUEENZ - THE SHOW WITH BALLS!, Assembly Rooms - Music Hall
The world can be a dark, colourless place. The news isn't exactly fun to read or hear, is it? Sometimes we need joy, laughter, great songs sung by people in incredible costumes and the best, biggest and brightest hair and make-up. And that's what you get with Queenz - The Show With Balls! Entering the stage to Whitney's "Queen of the Night", it's clear that these five performers exude talent. Their promotional material says they "dance like Britney and sing like Whitney", and it's not wrong.
Review: MICKY OVERMAN - SMALL DEATHS, Monkey Barrel - The Hive
It's impossible not to like Micky Overman. Her ease with the audience is charming and full of wit. Her occasional silly voices are hilarious. The show itself is a little slow to start, and it takes a small amount of time to warm up. Early on, it feels like she is trying out some new jokes and seeing how they land. There are tiny moments of very slightly awkward silence but it didn't seem like the audience was bothered by this at all, and many of them I heard comment on how funny Micky is.
