Rigid, hardware-bound PCs on legacy factory floors have long acted as a bottleneck for the electric vehicle transition. To eliminate these infrastructure constraints without risking costly downtime, Audi developed its Edge Cloud 4 Production (EC4P) architecture, built on VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) at the Edge. By deploying an on-premises private edge cloud, Audi completely decouples automation control logic from physical machinery.

Traditional infrastructure was never designed for edge scale. Managing hundreds to thousands of distributed sites with fragmented stacks, siloed tools, and manual processes creates operational risk, inconsistent security, and costly site-by-site management. For many organizations, this means logging into hundreds of sites to apply updates, troubleshooting inconsistent configurations, and relying on on-site IT slowing deployments and increasing risk.

Manufacturing automation is at an inflection point. AI is rapidly moving from experimentation to expectation, yet many factories still operate on hardware centric architectures designed for a different era. The result is a growing mismatch: AI ambitions are advancing faster than production infrastructure can support, creating new operational and competitive challenges. As AI use cases move closer to production workloads, this gap is becoming harder for manufacturing leaders to ignore.
