Depressive symptoms and interpersonal problems, defined as maladaptive patterns in relating to others, are strongly interrelated. According to the stress generation theory (Hammen, 1991, 2005) and the interpersonal theory of depression (Coyne, 1976; Joiner, 1999), depressed individuals are not merely passive recipients of stressful experiences but may also contribute to their stressors through maladaptive social behaviors.
