Heart failure is a leading cause of hospitalization and death worldwide, and it is known that the initiation and progression of the inflammatory response is highly indicative of long-term patient outcomes. Interestingly, while smoking is a well-known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, recent findings reveal that smokers have improved clinical outcomes, a shorter length of stay in the hospital, and lower in-hospital mortality and mortality risk compared to non-smokers.
