1 INTRODUCTION Medical studies are typically expensive to conduct, with costs measured by time, money, or required expertise. Varying costs for predictor variables arise in settings such as medical diagnoses,1 risk calculators,2-5 and healthcare quality assessments. When collecting or analyzing data to determine which predictors are most useful, their costs should be taken into account to accommodate available budgets.

We’re learning new information about the suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that was shot down off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday. A State Department spokesperson said the balloon was able to collect communications and data via a satellite and had “multiple antennas” in addition to other equipment used “clearly for intelligence surveillance,” Axios reported.
