Patrick Ewing didn’t grow up around basketball. At 12 years old, living in Kingston, Jamaica, he had never even held one. His road to becoming the face of the New York Knicks started with his parents’ willingness to sacrifice everything. In 1971, Dorothy Ewing left her husband and seven children behind in Jamaica. She moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts and took a job in a hospital kitchen. For years, she worked long shifts and saved every dollar she could for her family.
