Revisited: Stephen Cone (Princess Cyd) Talks His Favorite Thanksgiving Movie, Home for the Holidays
For Thanksgiving week, we’re republishing this 2015 piece by Stephen Cone about a movie that has great personal significance for him. I hope you all have a happy and peaceful holiday! — N.D. I first saw Home for the Holidays at the Julia IV Cinemas in Florence, South Carolina, on what I’m guessing was either the first or second week of November, 1995. I was 15 years old. In my mind, my sister Christina is there, but she would’ve been 13 at the time and movies were Dad’s and my thing.
A Constant Becoming
André Téchiné’s Wild Reeds ends in a swirling Eden, with a 360-degree pan around a serene wooded meadow in the south of France. At first, the landscape is empty of human life, but as the pan completes itself, we pick up our protagonists, teenagers François, Maïté, and Serge.
Underrated/Overlooked: Stephen Cone on Blockers
The year 2018 was the most topsy turvy – politically, socially, culturally – in my memory. From the high stakes to the low stakes, at every turn it seemed to be opposite day; what was previously true was true no longer, the hidden was made visible, and vice versa. You hear “Yanny,” I hear “Laurel.” Good Morning America turned into The Twilight Zone. And, for this viewer, at least, the strangeness extended to film.
Stephen Cone (Henry Gamble's Birthday Party) Talks His Favorite Thanksgiving Movie, Home for the Holidays
I think she’s there in my mind because the film features an exquisitely drawn relationship between adult siblings, and it’s since become impossible for me to think about the film without thinking of her.
Dayton School Board member John McManus challenging state Rep. Jim Butler
Republican state Rep. Jim Butler is facing a challenge from Dayton School Board Member John McManus, a Democrat, in this fall’s election for the 41st District state House seat. Both candidates share a commitment to bringing more jobs to Ohio, boosting the economy and doing more to improve the health care system, but they differ on how to do it. The district includes Kettering, Oakwood and parts of Centerville, Dayton and Riverside. WHAT’S ON YOUR BALLOT?

Films for Children at the End of the World: An Appreciation of Carroll Ballard
I read Thoreau’s Walden for the first time this past January, prompted by a longing to extend myself out of the noise of the 21st century and into the quieter, more reflective space of the pre-digital era. In my own circle of friends and acquaintances (both real life and online), I’ve seen this longing mirrored in an upswing of folks vowing off Facebook and Twitter (I’ve succeeded in the former but not the latter).
‘The Wise Kids,’ a Coming-of-Age Story by Stephen Cone
The likable main characters in Stephen Cone’s tenderhearted gem, “The Wise Kids,” are earnest Christian teenagers associated with a Baptist church in Charleston, S.C. The radiant, redheaded Brea (Molly Kunz), the minister’s daughter; the tall, skinny Tim (Tyler Ross), an aspiring filmmaker; and the intense, devout Laura (Allison Torem), whose prayers reiterate the words “amazing” and “awesome,” are high school seniors and friends who will soon go their separate ways.
Stephen Cone on Working Outside the System
Making a Movie For me it usually starts with a feeling of wanting to do something, rather than the specific story idea for a film. I’m not someone who’s ever in danger of running out of ideas. In fact, I have too many. I’m making movies for under $200,000 and over the last five or six years I will generally know by the fall of the year if I can raise the money for a $100-150,000 movie.
Personal Shopper and the Movies That Haunt Us
There is a beguiling tradition of commingling spiritualism and art, exemplified by the words and works left behind by abstract painters Hilma af Klint and Wassily Kandinsky. Here, from the latter: “The true work of art is born from the ‘artist’: a mysterious, enigmatic, and mystical creation. It detaches itself from him, it acquires an autonomous life, becomes a personality, an independent subject, animated with a spiritual breath, the living subject of a real existence of being.â€?

Why Point Break Still Delivers 25 Years On
Of all the mainstream movie magazines that have come and gone, there’s one embedded in my memory that I cannot find on the internet. It was circulated in the early 1990s, the sort of thin, floppy pop-culture ‘zine found in malls and grocery stores, that would’ve appealed to an 11-year-old just starting to become interested in what the grown-ups were watching, what was on the studio docket, what an actor was doing next, and what a director was exactly.
