The best books on William Tecumseh Sherman
Home William Tecumseh Sherman books Candice's list Who am I? I was fated to write about war. Born on Guam to a Navy hospital corpsman and his intrepid wife, I spent four years on tank-littered beaches of Saipan and sailed to Japan on a U.S. Navy LST at the age of seven. When I graduated from college with a major in journalism, a Navy man, the late great Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson hired me as his press secretary, and we talked military history even as he made it in Afghanistan.
Fourth Week, First Contemplation, Second Prelude
Your place, not mine. Vessels for water, of course. Maybe one for wine. Bread, smoked fish, honey in an earthen jar. Basins for ablutions. The bed you share with pleasure to ponder. And somewhere for prayer, rug, bench, stool, shelf beneath the shell collection, keepsake chips of Egyptian glass, Silk Road cloth, a dark blue piece. But the stones, where are they, or whatever you’ve lifted to make those small arms strong enough for the thirteenth station, his deadweight draped upon them?
Whitman and Patriotism
“The United States themselves are essentially the greatest poem.” What presidential speechwriter, talk-radio host, bumper-sticker sloganeer, or all-around flag-waver has ever written or spoken higher praise? What anthem or pledge, sung or recited before a sports event or at a school, contains so unabashed a superlative?
Why San Diego should delay acting on energy choice plan
Does it make sense for San Diego to start a government-controlled energy program? We believe City Hall should stick to the basics for now — caring for our homeless population, repairing our roads and maintaining our parks and libraries. Some people want to move San Diego into the energy business because of the perceived environmental benefits.
Atheism’s Easier
Abstain from staring too long at the sky. Stick to screens, little keyboards; block out birds with private earbuds; never hear the wind breathe harder. Watch TV. Always drive. Try to avoid a night outside in ladled moonlight, glowing broth. Eschew solitude; cut back on silence; call up someone just to gossip; send lots of messages; read them, too.

The Fruit Thereof
Hold the phone, it wasn’t an apple, apples have seeds and seed-bearers, check, perfectly fine in vegan Eden, nor does the story name the fruit, botanical paradox, fruit without seed, which even those grapes, supposedly seedless, have at some stage, albeit vestigial, and if the tree delighted her eyes, then Stevens was wrong, beauty in Eden preceded death, the former the dam, the latter her brat, aesthetic pleasure in low-hanging stunners also permissible and prelapsarian, given refraining...
San Diego’s water strategy deserves reward from state
Over the past 25 years, few communities across the nation have done as much to enhance water supply reliability as San Diego County.
Beside the Point
The sky has never won a prize. The clouds have no careers. The rainbow doesn’t say my work, thank goodness. The rock in the creek’s not so productive. The mud on the bank’s not too pragmatic. There’s nothing useful in the noise the wind makes in the leaves. Buck up now, my fellow superfluity, and let’s both be of that worthless ilk, self-indulgent as shooting stars, self-absorbed as sunsets. Who cares if we’re inconsequential?
