Opinion: Retail Access to Private Markets? Continuation Funds Show Why Caution Is Critical
Continuation funds carry a warning for retail investors — and a challenge for regulators. As policymakers consider opening private markets to retail investors, they should draw lessons from the rise of continuation funds. These once-obscure private market funds have grown significantly, with transactions surging to $63 billion in 2024, and their rapid rise tells us much about the current state of private markets.
Common Faults Part: Downswing Tips for Players
In this article I’d like to cover the importance of letting the club fall or topple in front of the hands during the downswing. (Picture 1) I see many players trying to let the club fall behind the hands (shallow) or hold the club for as long as possible behind the hands (lag) as they initiate the downswing. (Picture 2) From this position the club can easily get trapped behind and requires an extremely athletic move with the body and wrists to return squarely to the ball.
Tyrrell Hatton's Unique Golf Swing Explained
Tyrrell Hatton’s swing is a model of simplicity and precision. Developed early in his career and refined through consistency rather than constant tinkering, it’s a no-frills action that holds up under pressure. His ability to own his swing is a key reason behind his reputation as one of the Tour’s most reliable performers. Tyrrell is one of the most consistent players on the planet and you can certainly see why from his simple no fuss swing.
Robert MacIntyre's Approach to Unrestricted Golfing
Robert is a natural player who demonstrates a free flowing unrestricted swing. He uses his body and arms to full effect and doesn’t hold anything back. As golfers its easy to try and control your natural tendencies to a point where the swing becomes mechanical and lacks power. I enjoy how Robert lets his natural movement flow and feel this is something we can all benefit from.
Stephen Deane: Improve Your Downswing Technique
Understanding the trail knee movement during the downswing can correct multiple faults. It’s a common for many players to allow the trail knee to pass the toe line during the downswing. This pattern is associated with an early hip turn which results in a lack of pressure shift into the lead side and a restricted space for the club to move on a consistent path. As a result its easy to struggle with strike and flight control.
Shane Lowry: Insights into Natural Golf Technique
By Stephen Deane – Head International Development Coach for Dubai Golf Shane Lowry’s major move Shane is such a natural player who can comfortably control the shape and trajectory of his ball. Coaches often talk about the ability of a player who can hit all nine shot shapes/ windows and Shane can certainly do that with ease. He focusses on good setup rather than the swing and I feel that’s what amateurs can learn most from – his naturally instinctive movement.
The Waeve - City Lights
Since embarking on a solo career for the first time back in 1998, Graham Coxon hasn’t really put a foot wrong.
Nada Surf - Moon Mirror
On their latest record, Nada Surf sound like a band having an absolute, unadulterated blast. Indeed, blast their way through Moon Mirror from start to finish is pretty much what they do.
Peel Dream Magazine - Rose Main Reading Room
When during the pandemic Peel Dream Magazine’s Joseph Stevens ditched his native New York for the West Coast, the result was Pad, a strange and somewhat unsatisfying conceptual album about getting kicked out of his own band and at one point joining a cult.
Commentary: Private fund good governance more important after SEC rules struck down
Breadcrumb Home INDUSTRY VOICES July 11, 2024 02:07 PM Tweet Share Share Email More Reprints Print Stephen Deane Opinions are polarized on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling striking down the package of SEC private fund advisers rules. Although the court’s ruling was sweeping — vacating all five rules within the SEC final rule — it did so on narrow grounds, finding that the SEC did not have the authority to adopt the regulations.
The Future Legal Tender: Chinese Views on CBDC
Stephen Deane and Olivier Fines discuss the findings of a global survey on CBDCs, focusing on views from respondents in mainland China. As the 2022 crypto winter recedes, digital assets are gradually regaining their lost popularity. And many regulators and governments around the world are exploring the possibility of launching Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) to keep up with the trend.
The First Investor Advocate to Leave the Office he Founded
[Mr. Deane worked in the SEC Office of the Investor Advocate from its inception in 2014 until 2020.] The SEC is marking a changing of the guard. Rick Fleming, who became the Commission's first Investor Advocate in February 2014, will step down on July 1. The SEC announced his impending departure on May 27. Over the past eight years, he built out the Office of the Investor Advocate and defined its role as the SEC's internal watchdog.
FINRA Targets Recidivist Brokers-But Its Reach Goes Only So Far
When it comes to protecting investors from broker misconduct, all eyes are focused on whether the SEC will amend Regulation Best Interest, which requires brokers to act in the best interest of their customers when making recommendations. Meanwhile, FINRA, the self-regulatory organization for broker-dealers, has taken less-noticed steps of its own to protect investors from recidivist brokers.
Addressing Mistrust of Short Selling
When it comes to short sellers, people either love ’em or hate ’em. Never popular, short sellers seem to evoke a visceral animosity from a vocal segment of the investing public. We saw that earlier this year in the meme stock short squeezes that reportedly pitted Redditors and Robinhood traders against short selling hedge funds.

The Riveting Story of Economic Analysis at The SEC
The SEC is under new management, and on June 12 it announced its latest rulemaking agenda. It should add one more priority to its to-do list: restoring the integrity of SEC economic analyses. That’s critical to inform good policies and to withstand any court challenges.
The SEC's Unfinished Business: A Major Rewrite of Disclosure Rules for Mutual Funds and ETFs
As the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) shifts to a new era under the Biden presidency, we hope it will continue with one piece of unfinished business: a major rewrite of the disclosure rules for mutual funds and ETFs. The 646-page rule proposal, which the SEC released last year, was unusual in garnering bipartisan praise from commissioners. And from the CFA Institute, which voiced overall support in its comment letter, while also suggesting further improvements.
Regulators Need to Rein in SPACs Before They Take Wall Street With Them
Text size A man walks by the New York Stock Exchange Spencer Platt/Getty Images There are two polar-opposite narratives about the special-purpose acquisition vehicles, known as SPACs, that have taken companies like DraftKings public. One hypes up SPACs; the other pumps fears they will collapse. But it is a third, looming narrative that is potentially most troubling. First, there is the hype. SPACs are exploding in popularity.
Money Market Mutual Funds Ignore Great Financial Crisis Lessons
For the second time in less than a decade the SEC is again examining risks and regulations around Money Market Mutual Funds (MMF). The reason is simple: twice in the last decade, the federal government has had to backstop losses so that customers had access to their funds. Without reform, will the federal government need bail out MMFs again?
