The day bad weather brought half a million birds to England
Vast numbers of redstarts were among the arrivals along the Suffolk coast in October 1965. Photograph: Kevin Elsby/Alamy My birding mentor, the late Derek Moore, was also a keen cricketer. But one autumn day in 1965 he was unable to concentrate while fielding because many hundreds of songbirds were landing around him on the pitch at Lowestoft.
The day bad weather brought half a million birds to England Original
My birding mentor, the late Derek Moore, was also a keen cricketer. But one autumn day in 1965 he was unable to concentrate while fielding because many hundreds of songbirds were landing around him on the pitch at Lowestoft. The arrival of hundreds of thousands of birds along the Suffolk coast that day became known as the "Great Fall", and it was caused by a weather system bringing cloud, winds and heavy rain.
Birdwatch: the avian equivalent of a catwalk model, blue cranes are under threat Original
Few birds are quite as elegant as the blue crane. As I watched a pair feeding alongside a busy road in South Africa, against the rather incongruous backdrop of a herd of cows, I was struck by their sheer beauty. With a slender body, curved neck, long legs, elongated tail plumes and a subtle, dove-grey plumage, this bird really is the avian equivalent of a catwalk model. But not all is well for the blue crane.
Harry Green obituary
The conservationist Harry Green was a naturalist of the amateur school, with an encyclopedic knowledge of British wildlife based on a lifetime in the field. Though born and brought up in Oxfordshire, he spent the whole of his adult life in his adopted county of Worcestershire. Harry, who has died aged 92, remembered being kept awake during the second world war by calling corncrakes in the meadows near his home.
Bill Oddie obituary
Bill Oddie, who has died aged 85, was a multi-talented performer who found his greatest comedy success on television with his fellow Cambridge University Footlights members Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden in The Goodies, a sketch show that combined the anarchic elements of Monty Python’s Flying Circus with “silly” sight gags. Oddie’s self-taught musical skills steered the trio into the charts with his compositions – pastiche rock’n’roll songs such as The Funky Gibbon and Nappy Love.
Doug Allan obituary
Allan filming a humpback whale mother and calf in the South Pacific, for Planet Earth, 2005.Photograph: Sue Flood Filming polar bears in their Arctic home requires bravery and patience. Of all the wildlife film-makers who bring images of the natural world to our TV screens, few were as courageous or boundlessly patient as Doug Allan, who would spend weeks, even months on end in this harsh environment in order to capture unique and astounding footage.
Clive Byers obituary
Clive Byers’ cover illustration for the book Buntings and Sparrows, published by Pica Press, 1996 Photograph: My friend Clive Byers, who has died aged 68, was one of Britain’s best-known bird artists, whose forensically accurate illustrations graced many books, including the groundbreaking series Handbook of the Birds of the World. During the 1970s Clive was an avid twitcher: his determination to see a rare bird was legendary.

Birdwatch: Rain, water, wings - a winter’s gift at Cheddar reservoir
Wed, 11 February 2026 at 6:00 am UTC The red-necked grebe is rarely seen in Britain.Photograph: All Canada Photos/Alamy After weeks of heavy rain, Cheddar reservoir in Somerset is finally full again – of water, and of birds. Thousands of coots, hundreds of gulls and ducks, and dozens of great crested grebes crowd the surface, some already moulting into their smart breeding plumage, crests and all. They feed almost constantly, building up energy reserves for the breeding season.
Britain’s tiniest waders delight birdwatchers in Somerset
Nestled beneath the Mendip Hills, just outside the home of the eponymous cheese, Cheddar reservoir is a well-known hotspot for waterbirds – especially the large flocks of ducks, coots and grebes that overwinter here. Wading birds also drop in, especially during spring and autumn, though are usually confined to strips of mud around the shoreline. But this year is different.
Birdwatch: in spring, the unshowy grey plover undergoes a transformation
Any bird with “grey” in its name is not likely to make the average birder quiver with excitement. And it is true that in winter, when grey plovers visit our shores from the high Arctic, they are easy to overlook, especially among the spectacular flocks of lapwings, golden plovers and avocets on my Somerset coastal patch. Stout and unassuming, grey plovers usually lurk on the edge of the mud beneath the sea wall, patiently picking off shellfish and marine worms with their short bills.
Birdwatch: have we been getting the unadmired starling all wrong?
If there were a competition for Britain’s least admired bird, the starling would be a leading contender for first prize. Only magpies, carrion crows and feral pigeons come close. It’s not that we actively hate starlings, although some people do resent their dominance over smaller birds at their garden feeders. But few would admit to actually liking them.

Gender, race, climate and the New Nature Writing
Twenty years ago, in the last year of the old millennium, a book about “wild swimming” became a surprise bestseller. Subtitled A Swimmer’s Journey Through Britain, Waterlog combined the classic quest narrative with a new way of writing about the natural world, the product of author Roger Deakin’s lifelong passions for swimming and nature. Waterlog helped to turn wild swimming from a niche interest into a nationwide obsession.

No need for juvenile language in Nature
I was surprised by your Research Highlight ‘Why naked mole rats eat poo’ (Nature 561, 9; 2018). It was not so much the content that surprised me but the use of the colloquial and decidedly juvenile headline. I hesitate to speak on behalf of the global scientific community, but I think it’s safe to assume that we have the nous and maturity to deal with the word ‘faeces’.

Listen to Columbus Day - Audiobook
What disappointed you about Columbus Day? The book is written from the perspective of a Sergeant in the US Army. So far, so Heinlein (Starship Troopers). Indeed, the book contains all the gung-ho Americana you want, if that's your thing (it's not my thing).

Tasting Whiskey: An Insider's Guide to the Unique Pleasures of the World's Finest Spirits, Lew Bryson, David Wondrich - Amazon.com
I like the title. It reminds me right off the bat: The reason to drink whiskey is to taste it. And after studying this book, may I add? It should be done with care and respect during times of quiet contemplation. This is a great book for gifting: Perfect for the person who loves to sit in a comfortable chair, reading and sipping. You will find pleasure in giving this book. And the recipient could only be appreciative.
