Huzzah! Canada’s banks can tap American investors for mortgage funding again. Earlier this year, the U.S. SEC quietly granted a no-action exemption for covered bonds, allowing Canadian lenders to market them to American investors without the loan-level disclosure required for comparable U.S. products. The exemption arrived just months after Canada’s bank regulator clashed with lenders over inflated appraisals used to secure mortgages.

Most of Canada’s Employment Gains Are Temporary, 4x The Normal Share

Canadian employment stumbled after a multi-month winning streak that seemed to defy gravity. Statistics Canada’s (StatCan) Labour Force Survey (LFS) shows employment dropped sharply in August. On its own, it’s not particularly concerning as it only rolls back a fraction of the huge gains made recently. What is concerning is that temporary roles accounted for most of the employment growth—nearly 4x the usual rate. Seasonally adjusted Canadian employment fell 0.2% (-41,700) to 21.17 million in August.

Canada’s Real Estate Bubble: First-Time Buyers Need To Be Among Top Earners

Earning a healthy, middle-class income? Good for you, but odds are slanted against you when it comes to ever owning a home in Canada these days. Statistics Canada’s Canadian Housing Statistics Program (CHSP) looked at first-time buyer incomes. The data shows that first-time buyers had much higher incomes than the median household. The problems extend beyond pricey regions like B.C., into more “affordable” provinces like Nova Scotia.
