Edmonton’s Closest Saltwater Lake
Lakes like Miquelon Lake are often called “prairie potholes” because they rely entirely on rainwater and snowmelt. Unlike their mainstream cousins that get their water from rivers or streams and drain it away just as easily, prairie potholes don’t have that luxury. Instead, they lose water only through evaporation, leaving behind a salty concoction of dissolved minerals. You won’t find orcas or dolphins swimming around, but Miquelon Lake is still buzzing with wildlife.

Best Brunch | Edify.
Chartier I’ve never gone into a brunch place and immediately said “Holy shit” before, but I guess there’s a first time for everything, and my first time was at Chartier, in Beaumont. And that was before I saw the giant cinnamon bun. Technically, what I saw first were doughnuts, but I think they should coin a new name for the artistic pastry sandwiches that seemed too pretty to be real (and take 48 hours to create).
They say that you can eat with your eyes, right? Well, that’s what we’re asking you to do as we show off some of the wares from the city’s best bakeries, as chosen by our Best Restaurants judges. First, you’ll get all the carbs you could want with this selection of doughy delights. Then, we’ll show off some cake and pastries that are so good, you’ll want to skip the main course and go right to dessert. That’s OK — we won’t tell.
Best Soup | Edify.
Tokiwa It is maybe the most brutally honest sign that’s on display in any Edmonton eatery: When you approach Tokiwa, in neon letters, you will see “SOUP” or “NO SOUP,” like the old vacancy/no vacancy signs you may recall seeing in front of horror-movie motels. That’s because the ramen at Tokiwa is carefully made, and once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Edmonton Made: The Power of Jewellery
Shakti is the divine feminine power representing liberation, strength and empowerment; and it’s Sarah Bowker’s inspiration for her jewellery business. Bowker taught herself to make jewellery at a young age and sold her pieces at markets and festivals until she graduated from university. She spent 10 years working as a pediatric nurse, opened her own yoga studio and routinely travelled to India where she reconnected with her love for jewellery.
Edmonton Made: Pre-Loved Prairie Style
Caitlin Varrin and Danielle Annicchiarico came together in 2017 to create Lawless Vintage, a resell and styling company that celebrates prairie-style vintage. The best friends share a love for the thrill of the hunt and wrangle up the best of denim, jackets and matching sets. The items never last long you’ll have to act fast if a pair of cowboy boots is uploaded to Lawless Vintage’s website.
Pieces of Colour
An electrician by trade, Dale Shippit’s work has brought him to many, often isolated places across the province, including an eight-month live-in working contract in Fort Chipewyan, which helped bring out his inner artist. “I found myself on construction sites where they were throwing out all these good materials,” he says.
Get Them While They’re Hot
Emma Lakey’s passion for ceramics began when she was seven years old, but it wasn’t until 2019 when she decided to sell her work. She founded Lofi Ceramics, a small-batch ceramics business that sells a variety of mugs, trays and vases. “Small-batch ceramics is a juxtaposition to production pottery, which is getting super popular now,” says Lakey. “I do smaller drops and releases, and not orders.” Lofi Ceramics releases collections instead of having a constant product catalogue.

Edmonton Made: A Gem of a Drink
Like white diamonds, black diamonds can symbolize love. In the case of David and Andrea Scade, it represents their love — and their unique engagement. Andrea was never big on jewellery — so, when David proposed, they went to a custom ring maker, who suggested they go black. But black diamonds are also said to represent passion and charisma.
Edmonton Made: Art by Emily Chu
Emily Chu celebrates local landmarks Emily Chu’s series of seven Chinatown art prints began as a pandemic project for Chu to connect with her heritage. After receiving a grant from the Edmonton Arts Council, Chu organized a sketch club where artists could join her in Chinatown to sketch and listen to stories from longtime Chinatown members about the history of the area.

He couldn’t be a spy. Why would she even think he would be? “You’re not the first one to make that joke,” he smiled, deftly deflecting her parry. Perhaps it was the twinkle in his eye as he listened intently to her tales of her days. Or his cosmopolitan and soigné attitude whenever he escorted her to dinner or a play, his hand so warm in the small of her back guiding her as if she were Cyd Charisse in a Hollywood musical. Or how great he looked in either a tuxedo or a black leather bomber jacket.
A Family Affair | Edify.
“Pretty much all of the art is either mine or something I made with a friend,” she says. And as we sit at the long dining table surrounded by her creations, the Edmonton native quickly explains what brought her back from Vancouver in 2016, where she lived for five years.

It’s your first celebratory night out, post-pandemic (or post-vaccination). Where will you go and what will you be wearing? What is your full-on, dream look for this night out? If this happens during the Oilers season, I will be at the arena or a sports bar, decked out in my Oilers jersey, my orange and blue Converse (I wear one orange shoe and one blue shoe at the same time) and orange lipstick.

It’s your first celebratory night out, post-pandemic (or post-vaccination). Where will you go and what will you be wearing? The celebrations will have to wait until the pandemic subsides, regardless of vaccination status. I enjoy entertaining and am really looking forward to hosting an intimate group, giving friends a reason to dress up again. Is there an Edmonton or area boutique that’s your first destination when shopping for clothes?

It’s your first celebratory night out, post-pandemic (or post-vaccination). Where will you go and what will you be wearing? What is your full-on, dream look for this night out? Nothing beats a night out downtown. Love to celebrate at the annual Edmonton Chamber Ball or a summer night at a downtown festival with dinner and drinks at Bar Bricco or Sabor. Can’t beat a formal tux or perhaps a nice pastel summer suit. Is there a special accessory that completes your look? Does it have a story?
Best Dressed – Kari Skelton | Edify.
It’s your first celebratory night out, post-pandemic (or post-vaccination). Where will you go and what will you be wearing? What is your full-on, dream look for this night out? Do I have to get out of my joggers? I’m a homebody at heart! Running KariSkelton.com from our house while looking after our little guy, I’m mostly in athletic and loungewear. That won’t change, and I’m not mad about it.
