Citizen's handprint etched in time

Bevan Tremellan has long carved creations out of wood at Wangaratta Woodworkers club, and his handprint was the centre focus on Sunday at the unveiling of his carved handprint etched into the Marmungun Rock. The Rural City of Wangaratta Citizen of the Year Award was bestowed upon Mr Tremellan on Australia Day this year and his carved handprint, like others before him, honour individuals who demonstrate qualities valued in Indigenous Elders, including community service, integrity, and wisdom.

Council defends decision to pay out $5m

Wangaratta council has ended its parking contract with the Co Store eight years early, a deal that will save ratepayers $4 million in the long-term. Council had to payout $5m to Co Store owners Prudential Commercial Investments to exit its 20-year contract, however, council said the expense would have been $9m had it gone full-term.

Festival torpedoed again by fire risk concerns

The Folk, Rhythm & Life Festival at Eldorado originally set for this weekend has been postponed after council refused to grant a permit. Organiser Hamish Skermer reported that the event had sold more than $100,000 worth of tickets and 51 musical acts were on the bill to perform. Councillors met confidentially to discuss the a permit for the event which detailed an amendment for on-site parking as part of their working management plans.
