CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Darwin Núñez and about a dozen Uruguay teammates went into the stands as fans brawled at Bank of America Stadium following a 1-0 loss to Colombia in a Copa America semifinal on Wednesday night. After a physical and contentious match, a melee broke out behind the Uruguay bench after Mexican referee César Ramos' final whistle. The crowd of 70,644 was about 90% in favor in Colombia, but a small patch of Uruguay fans fought with Colombia supporters as beverages were thrown.

High school biology teacher looks to make the most of his ‘Tin Cup’ moment at the US Open
PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Colin Prater feels a little like Kevin Costner’s character in “Tin Cup” this week — a relative unknown who suddenly finds himself thrust onto one of golf’s biggest stages at the U.S. Open. It’s a movie Prater is quite familiar with, which is why he and his caddie staked out a spot at the far right end of the practice range — just in case things went completely awry.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Henderson, taken one spot behind Miller at No. 3 overall, shot 9 of 17 from the field as the Trail Blazers snapped a 10-game losing streak. Miller finished with 21 points to lead the Hornets, but struggled from long range finishing 1 of 8 from beyond the arc.
Panthers name 3 coordinators, hiring Brad Idzik on offense and retaining Ejiro Evero on defense
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The majority of new head coach Dave Canales' staff is now set in Carolina. The Panthers have agreed to terms with Brad Idzik as their new offensive coordinator and Tracy Smith as special teams coordinator, and also announced that Ejiro Evero has been retained as defensive coordinator. Idzik and Smith both worked with Canales in Tampa Bay and Seattle, and the return of Evero saves him from having to hire a completely new defensive staff.
Reich to call offensive plays for Panthers for now
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich said he plans to be the team’s offensive play-caller - at least for now. Reich, who called plays the past four seasons as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, said it’s something he feels comfortable doing and enjoys, but that he eventually plans on handing the role over to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown. When that will be, he doesn’t know. “I know that is going to be hard,” Reich said.

Reich’s offensive background helped him land Carolina job
Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper said Frank Reich’s strong and qualified background as an offensive-minded coach is one of the primary reasons he hired him as the team’s new head coach. And, ultimately, one of the reasons the Panthers passed on bringing back interim head coach Steve Wilks, who comes from a defensive background. “Every year we get in these NFL (owners) meetings and every year they put some new rule in to benefit the offense — every single year,” Tepper said.
Carolina Panthers hire Frank Reich as new head coach
For Reich, the hire represents a return to Carolina where he spent one season as the team’s quarterback and started the franchise’s inaugural game in 1995. Reich inherits a team that hasn't been to the playoffs since 2017 — and hasn't won a postseason game since winning the NFC championship in 2015 with league MVP Cam Newton at quarterback.
