A male knitter is "on a mission" to get more men wielding needles after his childhood efforts were thrown on the fire. Cartoonist David Shenton, 74, learnt to knit aged just five, but his father burnt his first creations. Now a national body that promotes the craft has praised the male-only group he set up. The UK Hand Knitting Association (UKHKA) described the Norwich-based Men's Knitting Group as "special".

Man in 'critical condition' after assault outside Loddon pub

A man is in a "critical condition" after an assault outside a pub in Norfolk. Police were called to reports of an attack near the King's Head in Bridge Street, Loddon, at about 21:30 GMT on Friday 10 November. The victim, aged in his 50s, suffered a serious head injury and was taken to hospital. Five men in their 20s have been arrested on suspicion of causing Grievous Bodily Harm.

IF you'd turned on Radio 4 at 3pm on Saturday you'd have chanced upon an hour-long drama entitled South on the Great North Road. Written by Tyneside-based Michael Chaplin, it tells the story of a Geordie trucker called Peggy and her chance meeting with a runaway lass trying to hitch-hike her way out of trouble from the Angel of the North. Beautifully scripted, with dialogue to die for, it would have held my attention whatever the road.
