Awooo! It’s been only two years since one of the area’s most celebrated Americana outfits released what was supposed to be their swansong. Left Arm Tan’s Undefeated was intended to be their last big swing. But champs don’t stay on the mat for long. Shortly after LAT’s end and a dalliance with a new band, the cosmic rockers Marfa Lights, guitarist and principal songwriter Daniel Hines suffered an injury and subsequent surgeries that left him unable to play for a time.

JAMBALOO Music Prize Winner

We finally caught up with Matthew McNeal after he took home the Mullen & Mullen Music Project’s inaugural JAMBALOO Music Prize for his 2025 album HIGHLONESOME. Besides a bevy of local-music-industry-related boons, the prize package included $20,000 cash, a sum at which anyone (let alone those engaged in the perennial struggles endemic to an independent music career) would be hesitant to sneeze. I’ve been thinking about what that prize might do for an artist. Would it fund touring? A follow-up album?

Royal Sons

The timing is probably coincidental, but Royal Sons are dropping their new album on June 27, which is a day after the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Little Bighorn. I bring this up primarily because the fourth track on the first side is called “Crazy Horse” but also because Matador has been a long time coming — the earliest-written song on the new album came together over five years ago, in part because the band kept missing their own self-imposed deadlines.
