Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve Sunset, Layton, UT, USA
The preserve is a dedicated natural space on the outskirts of Layton, UT, and lies in the path of many migratory birds. The Preserve is intended to provide a place for these birds to rest, as well as give the nature-loving public a chance to see them at a closer proximity. It sits about five or six miles west of the Wasatch Front, which is the mountain range that holds most of the popular ski resorts Utah is known for.
Spider Rock Sunrise, Canyon De Chelly National Monument, Chinle, AZ, USA
Canyon De Chelly National Monument is rich in Native American history, featuring deep canyon gorges, vibrant colors, diverse textures, and ancient dwellings. We visited during the fall of 2024 and were thrilled with all the experiences of exploring one of our nation’s iconic sites for the first time. One of the experiences I treasured the most was visiting Spider Rock, the pillar-shaped structure located near the center of the image.
Lake On The Edge, Great Salt Lake, Syracuse, Davis, Utah, USA
The east side of the Great Salt Lake is struggling for its life. A combination of a 15-year drought, population growth, related development, and increasing water demands from farmers has put this ancient icon on the brink of crisis. Much of the lake bed remains dry for much of the year, making it an intriguing location for photo walks. On this particular day, I was captivated by the scene.
Latourell Falls, Columbia River Gorge, Oregon, USA
This image was taken on 12/23/2024 on our return trip to Utah, USA, from the Oregon coast. This was our first experience in the Columbia River Gorge, and we were thrilled with the number and beauty of the waterfalls in the gorge. I loved these falls because I thought the brightness of the moss and the texture provided by the basalt columns made it very unique. I took several images at the location, but I decided to submit this one because I like the minimalist feel and the slightly blurred falls.
Creativity Meets Speed
Faster workflows don’t have to mean that creative quality suffers. With the right approach—it’s an all-round win. Production and post-production workflows have evolved at a breathtaking speed over the last few years. Some of this rapid development came about because the industry needed to pivot during the pandemic, and some were caused by the economic imperatives of smaller budgets and increasingly mobile and ephemeral audiences. As habits evolve, so must our response to them.

Heads up: NFPA 660 Standard for Combustible Dusts is coming
For a considerable time now, the NFPA has wanted to combine the five main commodity-specific combustible dust standards, 61, 484, 652, 654, and 664 (Food, Metals, Fundamentals, Chemical, and Wood) into a single standard resembling NFPA 70, the National Electric Code. During the last few years, this process has been ongoing and is now at the end of the First Draft Phase and moving into the Second Draft phase.

Collected process data can tell food manufacturers how their lines are performing, when there’s a concerning issue or trend, and whether or not products ultimately meet quality and safety standards. With so much insight waiting to be uncovered, it comes as no surprise that most plant-floor teams would want to collect as much data as they can from their various gauges and other equipment.

Operational Insights: Bringing Treasure to the Surface of Your Quality Data
All articles in this series: Quality data are the heart and soul of statistical process control (SPC), the industry standard methodology for measuring and controlling quality in manufacturing processes. Asking manufacturers to give up data is like asking them to give up water. It’s just something that is necessary for their survival. Well-known food and beverage brands will often turn to contract manufacturers to produce the quality products that their customers expect and enjoy. With their brand names on the line, these brand owners need assurance that their suppliers can deliver safe and high-quality goods and mitigate the looming threat of recalls. How do they know if they’re working with a reliable contract manufacturer?
Students improve even amid evaluation controversy
In 2012, New York education officials and the state’s teachers union announced one of the nation’s most aggressive programs for teacher and principal evaluation — the Annual Professional Performance Review system (APPR) — which required that 40% of an educator’s evaluation be based on student growth, using a combination of the state assessment and locally selected assessments; the other 60% to be based primarily on classroom observations.
