A Special Announcement and Thank You From NhRP President Steven M. Wise
Nearly forty years ago, I decided to devote my career to confronting the core problem facing nonhuman animals and their advocates: nonhuman animals’ rightlessness.
Rights as a response to ecological apocalypse
Recognizing the human right to live in a healthy environment, and the rights of nature itself, are both essential to securing humanity and the planet’s future. Photo: BringByBoringBrick/DeviantArt Humanity is sleep-walking towards an ecological apocalypse.
The struggle for nonhuman rights
The Nonhuman Rights Project argues that certain animals should be legal persons. In the world of rights, what divides persons and things?
Africa’s social movements present opportunities, not threats, for rights groups
After decolonization, many African political groups lost touch with the grassroots. Let’s not let the same happen to the continent’s professional human rights groups. The global upsurge in the streets and through new social movements presents a conundrum for human rights groups; on the one hand, it creates a tsunami of unpredictable change, while on the other hand, it promises new opportunities for renewal.
The Unjust Treatment of Elephants in Connecticut
Three years ago, the Nonhuman Rights Project began our fight for elephants’ right to bodily liberty in Connecticut—a state whose legal history has demonstrated the importance its judicial system has placed on bodily liberty as a fundamental principle of justice.
What Happy the elephant deserves: Give the Bronx Zoo’s pachyderm freedom
Not so Happy to be here. (Bebeto Matthews / AP) Soon the Bronx County Supreme Court will have the opportunity to consider the rights of a species loved and respected around the world for the extraordinary beings they are: elephants. A landmark case filed by the organization of which I am president, the Nonhuman Rights Project, is headed to Bronx County, home of the Bronx Zoo.
Hong Kong enhances position as hub for China-related disputes | Lexology
China, Hong Kong
January 23 2019 In a major development on 18 January 2019, the Hong Kong Secretary for Justice and the Vice-President of the PRC Supreme People’s Court signed an arrangement greatly expanding the circumstances in which judgments of the Hong Kong SAR courts will be recognised and enforced in Mainland courts and vice versa.
Progress in the fight for nonhuman rights - NY Daily News
Thanks to ever-evolving science and human experience, we know too much about members of other species, including such demonstrably autonomous species as great apes, elephants, dolphins and whales, to continue to keep them, against all reason and good public policy, on the "thing" side of that wall. Like us, they suffer when deprived of their liberty. To treat them as things keeps them in chains, cages and tanks, and undermines the principles of justice that protect us all.
Chimpanzee Rights: The Philosophers’ Brief
Since 2013, an organization called the Nonhuman Rights Project has brought before the New York State courts an unusual request—asking for habeas corpus hearings to determine whether Kiko and Tommy, two captive chimpanzees, should be considered legal persons with the fundamental right to bodily liberty.
What chimpanzees deserve - NY Daily News
I am an attorney for two chimpanzees, Tommy and Kiko. Unlike most attorneys, I have spent no time with my clients, because they are “owned by people in upstate New York, held captive without the company of other chimpanzees in an environment radically different from their natural habitat. Thursday, with the support of other lawyers and supporters across the globe, I will argue before a New York appeals court that Tommy and Kiko are legal “persons
Toward Animal Personhood
Every year, humans inflict tremendous suffering upon other animals. Humans hunt them by the millions, farm them by the billions, and fish them by the trillions. In circuses, zoos, rodeos, puppy mills, fur farms, factory farms, marine parks, and laboratories, humans routinely abuse and slaughter animals.
Harambe's rights were violated long before his tragic death
Last Saturday, two parents allowed their 4-year-old son to slip under a rail, through wires, then across a moat and enter the enclosure of two female gorillas and a 17-year-old male western lowland gorilla named Harambe at the Cincinnati Zoo.
Hyperlocal content at a crossroads
‘The magic of hyperlocal sites,’ according to Mark Potts, founder of the pioneering Backfence.com, ‘is that they provide a forum for community members to share and discuss what’s going on around town.’ Pott's site shut down in 2007, two years after launch, joining a list of early hyperlocal media casualties that includes the demise of CitySearch and Microsoft Sidewalk in the 1990s.
‘Key. Out.’: Steven M. Wise Comments on Interview with Hercules and Leo’s Chief Jailer
I write this sitting in an apartment off Avenue de Claude Bernard in Paris, where I am living for a week. Claude Bernard was a famous nineteenth-century physiologist and notorious vivisector of nonhuman animals whose abuse of them in search of data about livers and pancreases and vaso-motor nerves repulsed even his wife, who eventually divorced him and set up an anti-vivisection society. Bernard explained himself thus: “(t)he physiologist is no ordinary man.

Chimps have feelings and thoughts. They should also have rights
Chimpanzees are people too, you know. Ok, not exactly. But lawyer Steven Wise has spent the last 30 years working to change these animals' status from "things" to "persons." It's not a matter of legal semantics; as he describes in this fascinating talk, recognizing that animals like chimps have extraordinary cognitive capabilities and rethinking the way we treat them — legally — is no less than a moral duty.
Animal Rights, Animal Wrongs
Around the world, what the media often refer to as “the animal rights movement” is taking off. Mass protests, fierce lobbying, litigation, and draft treaties have led to new legislation at the national, provincial, and city levels. It is now forbidden to use great apes in biomedical research, to bullfight in Catalonia, and to operate factory farms and slaughterhouses without adhering to the stricter rules governing the treatment and living conditions of livestock.
La lutte pour les droits des non humains
"Chimpanzees are cognitively-complex, autonomous, and self-determining beings who can freely choose how to live rich lives."
Update on the Sandra Orangutan Case in Argentina
Those who have been following the developments of Argentina’s Sandra Orangutan case through the Nonhuman Rights Project know that we were initially pleased by media reports that an Argentine appellate court had freed Sandra pursuant to a writ of habeas corpus sought by an Argentine group called AFADA.
Should cognitive animals be considered people under the law?
Tommy can’t speak our language, but it can be assumed he doesn’t want to spend his life alone in a cage, Wise argued. “Both as a matter of liberty and a matter of equality, you can’t say that an autonomous person doesn’t have any rights simply because he is a chimpanzee,” he said. “He is remarkably like us, and he suffers like us.” Wise is quick to emphasize that the Nonhuman Rights Project isn’t seeking full human rights for Tommy and other chimpanzees.
